Materials for use in Structural Concrete Design\nConcrete is a complex ma
terial and specifying and selecting concrete for any job is a process requ
iring foresight and collaboration to achieve success.\nIn this presentatio
n we will review the fundamentals of concrete as a material with an emphas
is on understanding how this impacts all levels of stakeholders on a proje
ct. We will discuss the typical methods of specifying concrete and how to
use the national standard to simplify the specifications for structural de
sign. The presentation will provide an overview of some common challenges
and potential solutions encountered in projects related to constructabilit
 y. The presentation will also address some trends in the industry and sugg
est solutions that can be found through collaboration. Attendees should le
ave this presentation with a better understanding of how the raw materials
\, design specifications\, and construction practices are related and how
all stakeholders must work together to achieve success.\nSpeaker Bio\nRobe
 rt C. Johnson MASc.\, P.Eng.\, is a Construction Materials Engineer with T
hurber Engineering. He completed his Undergraduate and Masters degrees at
Toronto Metropolitan University with specialization in concrete materials.
\nMr. Johnson has a strong Concrete Materials skillset coming from nearly
15 years of specialized experience in the Ready-Mix Concrete and Consultin
g Industries. He joined Thurber Engineering’s Calgary office in 2012 befor
e joining Lafarge as Quality Manager for the Edmonton Ready-mix Operations

He also regularly provides industry-based presentations and guest lectures
to Civil Engineering courses and organizations such as ACI Alberta Chapte
r\, the University of Alberta\, the University of Saskatchewan\, and the G
NCTR.\nPart 2 of the Lunch & Learn PresentationNet Zero Cement and Evolvin
g Specifications\nSpeaker Bio:\nMatt Walker has worked at Heidelberg Mater
ials for 18 years. He has experience with Concrete and Cement and Suppleme
ntary cementing materials\, in Alberta\, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. His cu
rrent role is Cement Sales Manager for Manitoba and Saskatchewan\, support
